Freight Car Mechanic/Laborer

Vermont Railway, Inc. (VTR) is looking for a highly motivated freight car mechanic/ laborer to join our team based in Burlington, Vermont. Freight Car mechanic/ laborers are responsible for the inspection, repair and maintenance of freight cars. VTR provides in-house on the job training. Candidate must be able to read and write in English; be able to perform work on uneven surfaces, easily lift 75 lbs.; work safely on and around heavy and moving machinery;bend; lift; stoop; twist; kneel; squat; frequently climb ladders and get on/off equipment; walk on level or uneven ground for extended periods of time; stand and sit for extended periods of time;and work in adverse weather conditions. Mechanical background preferred.

Track Laborer

Vermont Rail System is seeking applicants for a Track Laborer position based out of Burlington, VT. Principal duties are the safe and efficient completion of maintenance and construction projects across the railroad. Successful candidates will be monitored for adherence to safety rules and railroad regulations. These positions are subject to random drug testing per the Federal Railroad Administration drug testing regulations.

  • Commitment to working safely with the ability and desire to observe and promote safe work habits.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Available to work at various job sites.
  • Weekend and holiday shifts required.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be able to perform work on uneven surfaces, easily lift seventy-five pounds, work on and around heavy and moving machinery, bend, lift, walk, stand and sit for extended periods of time. The environment and performance of duties require working in adverse weather conditions.
